What’s Going on at Dunbar High???
Due to recent discriminatory issues there is an emotional battle between staff and students. The students are taught by the staff not to discriminate. If discrimination or harassment occurs it will result in punishment. But what is this??? Dunbar staff is discriminating against and harassing cross dressing students. Which brings me to my next point… cross dressing is just a lifestyle choice to be made. Throughout the Dunbar High Code of Conduct for Students they do not even mention the fact that they will not allow us to cross dress. On the other hand on page 12 of the Student code of conduct number 17 to be exact… It clearly states that Discrimination against any person, student or staff on the basis of race, creed, color, sex, national origin or disability is prohibited with listed consequences. Florida Educational Equity Act states that discrimination on the basis of race, national origin, sex, or handicap against a student or an employee in the state system of public education is prohibited. [F.S. 228.2001 (2)(a)]. Therefore the disgust / discrimination displayed by staff is un-acceptable. What will be made of this? The students have no power over the staff, again in the code of conduct on page 12, number 18 it states that participating in a walk out, strike, sit-in, riot or similar action will result in discipline. What else can the students do besides take this problem to a higher level of authority? Even in the student Handbook it states that “our Beliefs” are “when everyone respects and supports one another, and holds high expectations, a safe and orderly learning environment will result.” Where is the supporting that is supposed to be going on? The school even says in their Core Values… “We (Dunbar High School) believe that all students can learn and staff can perform best in an organization that practices: Effective Communication and respect for diversity.” Student Rights and Responsibilities are to
– be treated with dignity and respect.
– and have reasonable and fair treatment.
The students deserve to have their rights and lifestyles protected… therefore they are searching for ways to protect themselves from this discrimination.
WE VOTE YES TO CROSS DRESSING RIGHTS…
