To the members of County/City Councils of Ireland, Members of the Oireachtas, Political Parties in Ireland, Community Representatives.
The signatories of this petition feel the current method of Presidential candidate selection is unfair and undemocratic. The choice of who should hold the office of President of Ireland is currently restricted to the County/City Councils and the members of the Oireachtas. This current method of candidate selection leaves the choice of who Irish voters can select as President in the hands of a limited political class and not in the hands of the Irish people. This leaves the office of the Presidency at risk of being used for political means which is inappropriate of the neutral status of the position.
We believe that if a candidate secures the signatures of 30,000 Irish citizens that this should justify inclusion in the Presidential race and a nomination. We ask that the process of candidate selection be put in the hands of the Irish people. We ask that a fair and democratic method of holding Presidential elections be debated by Oireachtas members and passed into law immediately.
