As of 2003, 19.3\% of New Yorks population is living in poverty. That is a disturbing fact because most of those people work fulltime jobs, and are making minimum wage. The price of living is steadily rising in New York, and a family of four that makes only $19,000 a year is having an extremely difficult time making ends meet. I believe the best way to solve this issue is to create a living wage ordinance. This will require that employers pay wages that are above the federal or state minimum wage levels. With living wage ordinances employees are guaranteed health insurance and paid vacation, and also the comfort of knowing that they will be living at or even above the self-sufficiency line. I strongly feel that a living wage should be set in order to help eliminate poverty in America. Signing this petition will bring us one step closer in eliminating poverty.
