Manitobans Call for a Just Income

We, the undersigned residents of Manitoba, believe that a job with a decent wage is the best possible anti-poverty strategy. Unfortunately, a Manitoban working full-time at the current minimum wage would fall far below the poverty line.

We commend the government for its recent and proposed increase in the minimum wage. However, these increases have not made-up for the many years in which the previous government froze the minimum wage.

We believe that the government should develop a public plan for establishing and maintaining a minimum wage that provides workers with a living wage.

To this end, we, the undersigned, are calling on the government to:

1) Commit to increase the minimum wage immediately by $.50 (rather than the proposed $.25 increase) to $7.00/hr, with a further increase to $7.75 by the end of 2003.
2) Continue to increase the minimum wage until it reaches 60\% of the average industrial wage, thereby ensuring a living wage rate in Manitoba.
