Melcor: Please Support "Occupy Edmonton"

Over 50 people who have been occupying the park for the past three days have been given an evacuation notice, effective 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, October 18, 2011.
The occupiers are hoping to raise awareness around the amount of influence corporations have over our political institutions, how they are dictating public policy and decimating the environment. They are also concerned about a system that puts the hunger for profits above the health and well-being of all our communities. The camp started following an Oct. 15 rally & march that drew thousands of people to the streets of Edmonton. The march was held on a global day of solidarity with the "Occupy Wall Street" movement.
The camp has been peaceful and has received overwhelming support from Edmontonians who have been delivering food, clothing and other supplies. Should Melcor Development proceed with a projected eviction of the protestors on Tuesday, Oct. 18, many people will face fines or arrests, and possibly criminal records. The protestors are not criminals or ne'er-do-wells, and should not face criminal trespassing charges for occupying an under-used park in the downtown core, for a worthy cause.
Melcor has an opportunity to demonstrate to the public-at-large that it responds favourably to social justice issues. We call on Melcor to treat the protestors with compassion by withdrawing your evacuation notice, and instead supporting the protestors by letting them stay in the park.
