This petition is to be given to government to show that the Irish people are not happy with the recognition the men of A coy 35BN got for the bravery shown during the siege of Jadotville, Congo 1961.
a stone monument with all the names was erected in Athlon barracks in 2005.
In 2016 the government held a little ceremony and issued out unit citations to the survivors and families of the deceased.
To us this is not good enough.
If the movie THE SIEGE OF JADOTVILLE was never made I doubt the government wouldn’t of held a ceremony and did so to save face.
A unit citation is not good enough for these men or families.
We believe nothing short of a MMG (military medal for gallantry) should be awarded by the president of Ireland
To the surviving members and families of the deceased members.
The qualifying criteria to receive the MMG in the Irish defence forces is as follows >
This medal may be awarded to officers, non-commissioned officers and privates of the Defence Forces and to members of the Army Nursing and Chaplaincy Services in recognition of the performance of any act of exceptional bravery or gallantry (other than one performed on war service) arising out of, or associated with, military service and involving risk to life and limb
These men fit all the criteria to receive these medals. They were not in war. They were on a peace keeping operation and after being attacked by a force of 3000 strong were abandoned by the government of Ireland and by the United Nations.
158 Irish troops against 3000.
These men against all odds in the eye of certain death fought side by side bravely defending one another protection the life’s of their comrades.
Justice needs to be served for these men and we will not be happy until these men receive the MMG.
