NJ Citizens Supporting Dusty's Law/A-3226, Legislation to Protect Service Dogs and Dogs in Training from Dog Attacks

This bill is named in honor of The Seeing Eye puppy named Dusty, a seeing eye dog that was attacked and gravely injured by another dog during his training exercises, along with his volunteer trainer. Attacks on service dogs are a widespread problem, and steps must be taken to ensure the safety of guide dogs and their owners. A 2003 survey of dog guide users conducted by The Seeing Eye indicated that 89 percent have experienced some type of interference by loose or uncontrolled dogs, and 42 percent have been attacked at least once. Preliminary data from an updated survey indicates that the problem is getting worse.
The impact of such attacks is tragic and costly. We respectfully urge the New Jersey State Legislature to do everything they can to make the streets safer for blind people and their Seeing Eye dogs, as well as for those New Jersey families who sacrifice so much of their time and love to raise and train these valuable companions.
