No to pro-war US Studies Centre

The pro-war US Studies Centre propsed for the University of Sydney is an attack on academic freedom.
The United States Studies Centre being established at Sydney Uni is an
attempt to manipulate university teaching and research by apologists for
US foreign policy. Although the centre is being masqueraded as an academic
study centre, undertakings given by the university particularly the
composition of the centre's board of directors show that any research or
courses critical of US foreign policy will be excluded from the centre.
Instead, the role of the centre has been explained by its proponents as to
counter "anti-American" attitudes and hostility to US foreign policy,
which has grown as a result of the US "war on terror" and the occupations of
Afghanistan and Iraq.
We, the undersigned, call on the University Senate to:
* Remove the power over the USSC's activities given to the pro-US and pro-war
campaign group the Australia American Association through their positions
on the board of directors, and to preserve university autonomy
* Or to close down the centre if this, and basic academic freedom within
the centre, cannot be guaranteed.
