To The Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-Moon,
Your Excellency,
On 12 June 2009, the 10th Presidential Elections of Iran was held. Within hours of the closing of polling stations, the incumbent, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was announced president. Millions of Iranians took to the streets to demonstrate their discontent with the fraudulent election results.
These peaceful demonstrations have been brutally suppressed by government agencies. Thousands of protestors have been assaulted and beaten up and many have been killed.
We, the undersigned, appeal to the UN to honor the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, to which the government of Iran is a party, by demanding the following:
I - Immediately halt state-sanctioned violence.
ARTICLE 5 (No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment
II - Immediately release all political prisoners.
ARTICLE 9 (No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention, or exile)
III - Conduct free election with UN supervision.
ARTICLE 21 [(3) the will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government]
