In the last 20 years, many countries have addressed the secrecy and shame associated with adoption, by opening up adoption records which allows adopted persons to obtain their original birth certificate and access personal genetically identifying information. CATO believes that no human being should ever have to "question" who they are, what is their medical history, what their ethnicity and who their ancestors are, or who their natural parents are. It is a fundamental human right to know one's natural identity. We are seeking support to help with a legislation that is presently undergoing recommendations with the Ontario Provincial Government. Bill-183, a proposed act of legislation will unseal Ontario's 78-year-old adoption records for adoptees and natural parents. Some opposition, however, are demanding that records remain sealed for the small percentage of natural mothers who want anonymity from their child. CATO believes that no person should be rejected the right to possess information about themselves. Adoptees came into this world with a unique identity and history -- and it belongs to them. Opening adoption records does not mean the right to a relationship - it means the right to personal information. Relationships are a choice made by consenting adults - not the government.
