Opposition to the appointment of Peter Sutherland as Chair of LSE Council and a request for a campus-wide referendum

We believe that Sutherland's involvement with environmental and human rights abuses makes him unsuitable to lead a university that was founded upon the ideals of social justice and human rights. BP has a documented history of alleged environmental and social abuses. Sutherland was also formerly Director-General of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and also the WTO at a time when it pursued policies which furthered the impoverishment of millions of people in the developing world. LSE has a proud tradition of social justice and democracy which will be greatly undermined by this appointment.
We are also concerned about the growing corporatisation and marketisation of LSE and that Sutherland's appointment will result in increased tuition fees, after the review of the top-up fees cap in 2008.
There has been inadequate consultation on this highly controversial appointment and the views of students in particular have not been acknowledged.
We therefore demand that LSE conducts a binding referendum of all students, staff and academics, on the appointment of Sutherland as LSE Chair of Council, or else request his resignation from the position.
