peanut and tree nut allergy awareness in schools

Even a miniscule amount of peanuts or peanut butter, too small to see or smell, can kill a child. The purpose of this petition is to bring it to our government officials attention that this is a serious concern. We want to make it mandatory that all schools educate its staff, students and parents about peanut and other tree nut allergies. And that they take other precautions as well, such as using cleaning products that do not contain peanuts, peanut oil, or any type of nuts. Also simple things like using soy peanut butter instead of regular peanut butter in their sandwiches and foods, or maybe even having a section in the cafeteria that serves peanut free foods. Simple things like this can save a childs life.
Research reported in the April 1999 JACI (Journal of Allergy & Clinical Immunology) estimated that 1\% of the population, or close to 3 million Americans, is allergic to peanuts or tree nuts. The JACI is the peer-reviewed scientific journal of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI). The prevalence of peanut allergies has doubled in the 5 years from 1997 to 2002.
Peanuts are responsible for nearly 100 deaths and 15,000 emergency room visits each year, says the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network, a nonprofit group based in Fairfax, Va.
