People Against Safe Clear and the undersigned citizens appeal to the Mayor and Council Members to repeal the new "Safe Clear" program enacted by the City of Houston and put in its place a program that will promote safety without unnecessarily penalizing motorists who have had the misfortune of being stranded with auto problems.
The current program does not take into account people who are poor or live from paycheck to paycheck. It also allows wrecker drivers to impound and sell cars that belong to people, because they have broken down on the side of the road and may not have money to pay for a tow, that they have not requested or required. In addition, the Safe Clear program does not take into account the impact on businesses such as AAA and other Road Side Assistance companies.
Lastly, we demand an apology from the Mayor's office for comments made by the Mayor's spokesperson that people should take better care of their vehicles and they won't break down. It is not the purpose of the Mayor's Office to lecture people regarding vehicle maintenance.
People Against Safe Clear and the undersigned WILL NOT allow this type of tyranny and oppression to continue in the City of Houston.
