The question for consideration in this ongoing argument is not SHOULD we require STUDENTS to pledge allegiance, but should we require EVERYONE to pledge allegiance.
Prior to September 11, it could be argued persuasively that this pledge was at best perfunctory, non-binding, meaningless, and at worst a violation of our natural rights.
But NOW, in war, do we not NEED to know---as we look at each passing soul in our work and play and travels here in the USA---that each of these persons has PLEDGED loyalty to the nation?
A pledge of allegiance assures your fellow citizens that you can be trusted. One's refusal to pledge allows your fellow citizens to know that you do NOT support the principles and the survival of this nation.
Yes---oaths can be either entered into deceitfully or can simply be broken. That's another matter to be addressed if/when individuals TURN on their fellow citizens after swearing allegiance.
The point? The pledge of allegiance is no longer a ritual. It is what a pledge of allegiance begins as: one's oath that one will be faithful to this nation---its principles and its people---and will NOT betray it.
On the subject of the requiring of students to recite the pledge, I would say that the schoolyears are a good time to innure the child with 1) the need for loyalty to the Republic to ensure its very survival, and 2) the sanctity of the oath.
We must pledge to each other so we know we can turn our backs on each other, so we know that I have your back when you need me, and that someone has EVERYONES back when I need them
