Petition to Support WSA Clean Elections

Wesleyans student body is made up of students with a wide-range of financial resources. The award of need-based financial aid recognizes this fact and helps account for these inequities. Wesleyan should provide equal opportunities for all students, regardless of their or their parents personal wealth.

However, students are currently responsible for funding their own campaigns for the WSA Presidency and Vice-Presidency. During last years campaign candidates distributed bottle openers, purchased professionally made posters, and created Facebook advertisements. These strategies, while ultimately effective, create an unfair disadvantage for students who cannot afford campaigns of this nature. The WSA President and Vice-President are very important positions and should be filled by the most qualified, motivated, and creative students, not those who possess the greatest financial resources. While we support the creativity and innovation behind these ideas, we wish to improve the system to offer these opportunities to all students, regardless of means.
