Protect the Right of Women to Have Their Birth Photographed!

The Waikato DHB has put in place new guidelines that deny women the right to have their birth professionally photographed at Waikato Women's Hospital once their birth falls under the secondary care umbrella. What this means is that women who, for example, end up having an induction of labour, or who choose to have an epidural, or who have their labour sped up with a syntocinon drip, will no longer be entitled to have their birth photographed by a professional!

Just last week, a first-time mother who was undergoing an induction of labour at Waikato Women's Hospital, was told she was not allowed to call the birth photographer to attend her birth. She had been very excited about the prospect of capturing the 'visual story' of this precious day in her life, so was utterly devastated when she was told that she wasn't allowed her birth photographer present. Needless to say, the birth photographer also felt terrible!

We need to let the Waikato DHB know that we WILL NOT TOLERATE their attempts to control who a woman chooses to have present at her birth! Our message is a particularly important one in that no other NZ DHB has guidelines for professional birth photographers. This is, therefore, a very significant and worrying precedent for the Waikato DHB to be setting.
