Reinstate Public Transportation in Glassell Park, Mount Washington, Highland Park, Cypress Park

In June of 2007, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) cancelled the 176 bus line. This line ran on Cypress Ave., Division St., El Paso St., and Ave. 50, serving the communities of Highland Park, Glassell Park, Mt. Washington, and Cypress Park. The cancellation of this service and the failure to replace it with a DASH or alternative line has left large portions of our neighborhoods without access to safe transportation.

We, the undersigned, demand for an alternative line to be introduced to serve the population living in this area. High demand for the service and the particular conditions of the area (i.e., hills and curvy roads, no sidewalks for pedestrians, and high speed traffic on Division St.) place an undue burden on the transit dependent population. These conditions present a significant risk of an accident for the low-income, elderly, and youth who have been compelled to walk because of the lack of public transportation. We believe that all Los Angeles residents have a right to safe transportation, especially in those areas where walking is particularly dangerous.
