Remove Schmidly as President of the University

We, the undersigned students of the University of New Mexico, hereby resolve to remove David Schmidly from the position as President of the University of New Mexico. We feel that as the leader of a public institution, a President is to serve the interests of the public and of the students, which has not been done by David Schmidly. He has failed to serve the interests of the public and of the students in the following ways:

1. Under the leadership of Schmidly, the Departments of Mathematics and Chemistry have lost necessary teaching faculty and have thereby failed to provide the students with the education that we both deserve and have paid for. This affects nearly all students at the University, since most students have to take either Mathematics or Chemistry. Schmidly has not corrected this problem, instead instituting a "hiring freeze" which ensures that students will continue not to receive a proper education. We seriously doubt his judgment on this, as he was quick to fill the vacancy left by former Head Football Coach Rocky Long, contradicting his own "hiring freeze".

As citizens of New Mexico, a state which has been on the forefront of scientific research for decades, we should ask no less but to have a university with competitive Mathematics and Science Departments, to prepare the next generation of new scientists for the New Mexico workforce.

2. Under the leadership of Schmidly, the Department of Psychology has not been able to hire a new adviser, due to the "hiring freeze". Psychology students are thereby not receiving the education that they deserve and have paid for.

3. In these tough economic times, he has failed to control spending at the University in non-important areas. He has resolved to hire more Vice Presidents, all with outrageously high salaries. We feel that this is a major lapse in judgment as the University has never needed these positions.

4. He has failed to give the faculty a pay raise to counteract the rise in cost of living, which has put undue stress on the faculty.

5. He has failed to act ethically in the position as President. He created a post with a salary of $92,000 to be filled by his son. This is an egregious conflict of interest.

6. He has resolved to move the Student Services Center off-campus, to the Lockheed Martin building miles away from campus. This will make it inconvenient for students to receive the services they need for a quality education.

7. He has resolve to remove the North Golf Course against the wishes of students.

In conclusion, for the reasons listed above, David Schmidly is simply not fit to serve as President of the University of New Mexico. We recommend that you remove him from this position and remove all future compensation, including severance.
