Instant resumption of normal life in Egypt.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Shortly after the demonstrations in Tunisia have resulted in the expulsion of their president, a group of faithful Egyptian youth, mostly online activists including bloggers, frustrated from restricted freedom of speech, absence of real democracy and the presence of a high rate of corruption have joined forces and used online methods to mobilize a huge number of Egyptian youth to demonstrate on the 25th of January 2011 calling for the current Egyptian regime to step down. The demonstrations were successful in amassing a large number of Egyptians which led to the call for another big demonstration on the following Friday 28th of January 2011. The Friday demonstration amassed an even larger number of demonstrators to the degree that the security forces were dismantled.
The regime responded rather slowly by having the government resign and forming a new one, assigning a vice president for the first time since the president assumed his position and publicly disclosing that president Husni Mubarak will not run for president in the next presidential elections late in 2011.
After Mubarak's speech the Egyptian street was divided into 3 broad groups: The first group called for the instant stepping down and departure of president Hosni Mubarak; the second group was glad with the changes the demonstrations have resulted in and agreed to wait for Mubarak to stay in power till the 2011 presidential elections while a third group were pro-Mubarak and wanted him to assume power indefinitely.
WHO WE ARE
We belong to the second group who are not pro-Mubarak yet believe in the necessity of a smooth change in power in accordance to the Egyptian constitution.
REASONING
Due to the collapse of the security forces (police) after the huge 28th of January demonstrations accompanied by the escape of thousands of prisoners from Egyptian jails, Egyptian citizens have witnessed a time of great insecurity. Egypt has seen a sudden dramatic drop in its economy due to the chaotic situation. The consequences of this are yet to be calculated yet are presumed to be quite disturbing.
In light of this and due to the fact that a sudden departure of the Egyptian president would only make things worse and due to the fact that there is seemingly no other practical agreed upon way out, given the current division in the Egyptian street, we believe that keeping Mubarak as president only till the next presidential elections in late 2011 is the wise way out.
PLEA
We call for the instant resumption of normal life in Egypt to preserve our economy and for the livelihood of the great majority of Egyptians and the greater good of our country Egypt.
