Saint Mary's University's (SMU) Academic Plan 2008-2011 states that the university is recognized for its commitment to social responsibility and endeavours to nurture and support productive, critical and responsible citizens.In this institutional context, we feel that it is SMU's duty to promote healthy food options, food that supports sustainable local and global livelihoods and protects the integrity of the environment.
Through global networks, be they social, political or cultural we understand that our individual actions ripple throughout the global community. Local choices have powerful global implications. This is especially true when it comes to the purchasing and consumption of food. The exclusive food service contract SMU has signed with Aramark Corporation denies the SMU community the freedom to access locally, ethically, organically-sourced healthy foods. Furthermore, food service on campus ignores diverse religious, cultural and budgetary requirements.
We, the undersigned, are dissatisfied with SMU's exclusive contract Aramark Corporation, the corporation's purchasing practices in particular the ill effects on health, livelihoods and the environment. We demand that the contract with Aramark Corporation be immediately terminated. The SMU community must work together in the search for an appropriate alternative.
