Save Church Parking Permits and Stop Labour’s Tax on Churches

We the undersigned demand that Newcastle City Council continues the Church Parking Permits scheme.
The Church Parking Permits were introduced when Sunday car parking charges were introduced to help city centre churches to maintain and build their congregation. Their removal would be a breach of a promise made at the time to local churches.
A £2 charge to worship on Sunday could be regarded as a £25,000 tax on charitable organisations at the very heart of our community. The amount saved is not significant but council spin could jeopardise good community relations and the future of historical churches.
Given the number of churches in areas where there are parking charges and the less frequent Sunday bus services, the Christian faith is facing a disproportionate cost compared to people of other religions or beliefs.
We believe Labour should end cheap parking for councillors before attacking committed church goers.
