Disney wants to buy Marvel.
This deal, if it goes through - would give Disney ownership not only of Marvel Comic itself, but of thousands of Marvel characters; including Spiderman,Iron Man, Wolverine, The Fantastic Four, Daredevil, The Punisher, Captain America...the list goes on and on.
WHY THIS IS SUCH A BAD IDEA -
LET'S LOOK AT A MARVEL STORYLINE:
A YOUNG MATT MURDOCK IS DETERMINED TO BE A FIGHTER LIKE HIS FATHER. HIS FATHER WANTS A BETTER LIFE FOR HIM, WANTS HIM TO BE A LAWYER. MATT RISKS HIS LIFE TO SAVE SOMEONE AND HIS SENSES HEIGHTEN, HIS PERCEPTION OF MOVEMENT AND SPACE IS ENHANCED. HE CAN HEAR A PIN DROP, YOUR HEARTBEAT WHEN YOU LIE. HE FIGHTS CRIME WEARING A DAREDEVIL SUIT AND FIGHTS FOR THE DISPOSSED AS A LAWYER IN HELL'S KITCHEN.
LET'S LOOK AT A DISNEY STORYLINE:
SIMBA IS A YOUNG LION. HE DISOBEYS HIS FATHER, THE NOBLE KING, TWICE - FIRST UNNECESSARILY ENDANGERING HIMSELF, THEN CAUSING HIS FATHER'S DEATH. IN SHAME AND FEAR SIMBA ABANDONS HIS NOW WIDOWED-MOTHER AND HIS ENTIRE NOW-KINGLESS TRIBE AND ESCAPES TO FIND HIMSELF IN AN UTOPIAN GARDEN WHERE HE IS TAUGHT 'NOT TO WORRY'. SIMBA IS LURED BACK TO HIS HOME TRIBE WHEN HE PURSUES A LIONESS. HE IS YOUNG, HE IS STRONG. HE WINS.
Now the Disney formula might have proven successful and it might even have generated tons of money as well as McDonalds marketing tie-ins. Sure. What it does lack is anything resembling the moral fiber that as FANS, and long-time readers, as people emotionally invested in the Marvel Universe - we have come to expect to find in the stories that Marvel has given us over the years, and in the characters that we've grown up with, lived with, and whose moral trial and tribulations we've shared.
For Marvel to even THINK that Disney's involvement would not eventually stain the relationship is crazy. For us as FANS to not let Marvel KNOW that you are likely to lose a whole bunch of us - would be stupid.
Marvel should know better by now. Your casual fans who wander into comics for a day or two when a Marvel movie comes out may be glittery, but he is fleeting. If anything - the ups and downs of the comics industry in the 90's should've demonstrated well enough that it's the long-time fans that you need to survive, and they are the ones who expect the best of you.
We are sorely disappointed to hear that you are even considering this deal, you are completely dropping the ball on this one. You are betraying a grave responsibility as a bearer of Modern Mythology (and make no mistake, the Marvel Universe is precisely THAT) - and you are in serious danger of losing your main base.
We urge Marvel to reconsider. We also remind Marvel of how successful it has been when it's done things properly. The Iron Man movie, for example, has done quite well world-wide. Why? Because you did it right.
Don't sell out on us now.
