Save Russell Howard Park from Proposed Development!
We are petitioning against the proposed development of Russell Howard Park. The park is situated in the heart of the South Ham residential estate and is well used for football and cricket during their respective seasons, and by the surrounding community for various activities. South Ham used to be farmland until it was earmarked for development in the 1950s and the town has been growing ever since. The park areas and open spaces in this town are few and far between and need to be preserved for future generations to enjoy!
The local South Ham Doctors surgery wish to merge with their sister surgery situated in Hatch Warren and relocate to a new Healthcare Centre, we are opposed to the suggestion of this being built on Russell Howard Park (corner of St Andrews Road and Pinkerton Road). The Practice proposes taking approximately half an acre from the corner of the parkland whilst using the existing car park in St Andrews Road. The car park is used at prime times by the parents of St Annes Primary School (on Pinkerton Road opposite the park) as well as all those using the local amenities e.g. netball courts, bowls green, football and cricket pitches. We already have a problem in this area with busy roads at peak times (school times, evenings and weekends) and the area does not always cope with the volume of cars needing to park. So the proposed development will not only encroach on the green it will add to these existing problems. The Practice has stated that the Council will lease them the land IF they receive the vital approval and funding they need from the Hampshire Primary Care Trust.
We believe that if this proposed development goes ahead it will set a precedent and the future of the parkland will be at great risk. We the undersigned wish our voices to be heard, we protest strongly against any development on the parkland.
