We are deeply concerned and apalled by the decision of the
administration of the Eastern Mediterranean University to merge the
departments of Music, Archaeology and Art History, History, English
Language and Humanities, and to stop admitting students to the
programmes offered by these four departments. We believe that this
decision, claimed to have been taken with regard to decreased student
admissions and the need to save money in times of financial stress in
unwarranted and unjust. Not only will this decision not provide the
university any considerable financial gain, but will result in the
loss of cultural impact that the university has had on the Turkish
Cypriot community over the years. We would like to urge the administrators to seriously re-consider this decision and prove that they sincerely care about both the diversity of education in their university and continue to support the cultural life and heritage and of the island.
