For the past several years, more than 59,000 Nevada students have depended on this scholarship as a lifeline to help afford college. High school students have pursued a vigorous course of study starting in their freshman year expecting it to pay off as they enter college. Now the Nevada legislature is telling these students that their efforts have been futile.
Considering the recent hike in tuition prices in NSHE institutions, many students need this award in order to ensure that they can graduate from college debt-free. Without Millennium, Nevada scholars will be forced to depend on student loans and enter an already dire economy with the burden of loan payments upon their shoulders. Other students will be discouraged from attending college at all, and Nevada will face an undereducated workforce that will be inadequately equipped to repair Nevada's struggling economy.
We, the students, parents of students, NSHE faculty, and Nevada voters refuse to bear this burden. Higher education is not a privilege exclusive to the wealthy. Any student who demonstrates a committment to academic achievement should and must be provided the resources for personal enrichment and societal success.
We implore the Nevada state legislature to make the Millennium Scholarship financially viable for at least the next few years, either by increasing the standards for the scholarship, drawing from preexisting funds like the Unclaimed Property Fund, or a combination thereof. If the future of the scholarship is not addressed, we will hold our elected officials accountable for this egregious broken promise.
