Sheridan Students Against Animals in Parked Cars

We are students at Sheridan College and we believe that animals should not be left in cars on campus property, while the owners are in the school.
We hope to inspire Sheridan pet owners to act responsibly by arranging proper accommodation for their pets while at Sheridan. With the support of the parking authority, the registrars office, and Sheridan community, we will be able to ensure that awareness of this issue reaches every Sheridan pet owner and prevents any animals of being left unattended in cars. We hope to accomplish this goal by September 2010.
We ask that you sign this petition in support of this cause because we believe that no animals big or small should be left inside of vehicles unattended. We hope to build awareness of this issue so that it could eventually be prevented.
In our experience, we encountered a dog left in a car in the parking lot with the windows left down very little, for over a 2 hour period on a hot day in May. After contacting parking security we were made aware that there have been incidences of cats being left in cars unattended with their litter boxes. This shows that the owner was planning on leaving them unattended for an unknown period of time.
Studies have shown that temperatures rise over 50\% inside of a car compared to the outside temperature. One study done by Harvard University found that with an outside temperature of 40C (100F) the internal temperature of the car reached 66C (150F). (links below)
Animals are not able to sweat like humans do.
Dogs cool themselves by panting and by sweating through their paws.
If they have only overheated air to breathe, animals can collapse, suffer brain damage and possibly die of heatstroke.
Just 15 minutes can be enough for an animal's body temperature to climb from a normal 39C (102.5F) to deadly levels that will damage the nervous and cardiovascular systems, often leaving the animal comatose, dehydrated and at risk of permanent impairment or death.
Please sign this petition and bring awareness to your family and friends to prevent this from occurring. Be proactive and not reactive!
