I looked up the meaning of the word 'CAPTAIN' in websters and found it to be 'a person who is at the head of or in authority over others; chief; leader'.
Then, I asked myself, which we all need to do.. all of us including team members, team Coach, every BCCI office holder and every die hard fan of Indian cricket, We all need to ask ourselves, DOES RAHUL DRAVID FIT THIS DEFINITION OF CAPTAIN?

I thought a lot about it and I could not assure myself to a positive result. We have always claimed Rahul to be the 'WALL' of Indian cricket. The word WALL itself sends out more of a defensive signal rather than an offensive or aggresive one. A WALL is great at defending any attack against it but cannot go out and attack. A captain needs to be aggresive, attacking, thinking and one who can look at face to face with the opposition. I love Rahul as a cricketer and agree that he is of immense importance to Indian cricket and the current team but I dont find him to fit in the definition of a good captain.

If we look at the captaincy of Sourav Ganguly, whom we all have enjoyed captaining the Men in Blue, he brought in a new flavour to Indian cricket and a new aroma which never existed before or was never seen in Indian cricket. I am listing down a few positives that Ganguly brought in Indian cricket as a captain and we need all of these at this time desperately.

TEAM HUDDLES

Where have these disappeared? Remember the time when at the fall of every wicket, every team member would run up to the center of the ground and every member of the team would get into a group team huddle to pump each other up. This not only pumped up the Indian team but also sent some frightening vibes to the opposition. The team looked like a team rather than a group of great cricketers !

SELF-BELIEF, CONFIDENCE AND FIGHTING SPIRIT

We needed 326 runs to win the Natwest Final against England in 2002, and Team India was down to 146/5. Ganguly, Tendulkar, Dravid and Sehwag gone ! But with self-belief to win, a great fighting spirit and A POSITIVE ATTITUDE FROM THE HEAD did wonders and Sourav's boys pulled of a miracle !
Remember Ganguly did not fail as a batsman in that match. He scored 60 of 43 balls with 10 fours and 1 six !

8 straight wins in the World Cup to reach the finals and coming close to beating Australia in their own backyard is not a thing of distant past yet ! There were times when millions of fans of Indian Cricket would have left hope of a win and the Men in blue would still pull it off. Rarely, we used to go down timidly to a opposition. Even teams like Australia, South Africa or Pakistan would not afford to celebrate till the last bowl of the 50th over is bowled !

We can still do it provided we can get ourselves into the same positive frame of mind as before !

BE ABLE TO FACE EYE-TO-EYE WITH THE OPPOSITION

Would Rahul Dravid have the guts to take off his shirt sitting in the Lord's Balcony and be able to say to Andrew Flintoff "Take that !"? Would Rahul Dravid be able to say in press to the Australian Captain to mind his own business. Surely we can debate on the right and wrong part of it, but it definitely suggested the POSITIVE FRAME OF MIND the Indian captain and the Men in Blue were under !

BROOMING YOUNGSTERS

Ganguly did a terrific job brooming youngsters during his time as a captain and standing behind them giving them the confidence and right chances. Instead of being a puppet of the Coach or the selectors Ganguly had his own men on whom he had confidence and would back them immensely as a result of which we got Sehwag, Dhoni, Kaif, Yuvraj, Zaheer, Irfan. Havent seen a similar talent hunt since the departure of Ganguly as a captain.

SOURAV GANGULY AS CAPTAIN OF INDIAN CRICKET TEAM IN WORLD CUP 2007 !

As much as I love Rahul Dravid as a player and want him to be a part of the Indian team, I think that its time Indian cricket needs a more aggresive, positive Captain who can bring back the flavour and spice back to Indian Cricket. I think even today Ganguly is the best bet we have for a captain but would be happy with anybody else with Similar qualities. I would request the BCCI to give TEAM INDIA the captain they deserve and desperately need !

LET US ALL VOTE FOR GANGULY AS CAPTAIN FOR INDIAN CRICKET TEAM IN WORLD CUP 2007 !
