We, alumni, parents and/or residents of the West Shore School District, hereby offer our support to the current students of the West Shore School District as they stand in peaceful protest against the recent action of the school board to approve $1.2 million in cuts to their education programming, including Whitetail Environmental Center program and technology aides, as well as the district's family and consumer sciences program.
The most important job of our education system is to prepare students for their role as citizens of the world outside the school walls. The democracy they have studied in their textbooks would be impossible without active and widespread participation by all of its citizens. These students have now come together to do just that: to exercise their right to have their voices heard.
Therefore, we stand with these students in their demand for a solution to budget concerns that takes into account the wants and needs of students, parents and teachers and does not view these valuable programs as expendable.
