South African banks are ripping the public off with their extortionate bank charges. It's quite possible that you can end up paying hundreds of Rand a month just to access your own money. I have noticed that I now pay R1.50 just for an account enquiry at an ATM machine. An ATM withdrawal can cost you over R10 per transaction, a direct debit will cost you R4.65 from an ABSA account. In the UK you don't pay bank charges for the majority of ATM withdrawals or direct debit payments.
