Stop Sleep Technician Bill in Tennessee Now

Dear Sir or Madam,

This is to bring to your attention that unless something is done right away, a new licensure rule will be implemented for sleep technologists in the state of Tennessee. If this bill goes into effect, it will prohibit a physician, who is licensed in the other 49 states, from conducting a polysomnographic test. It will also effectively prohibit medical students and premedical students from learning and conducting polysomnograhic tests.

Furthermore, it is going to, in one sweep, lead to the unemployment of thousands of sleep technicians who have been dedicated and committed to the field of sleep medicine and have been practicing according to the guidelines of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). Even though these technicians are actively enrolled in the AASM module program, if this licensure rule goes into effect, they will become unemployed.

We are requesting the entire statute be reevaluated with the input of several more board certified sleep specialists across the state involved in the reevaluation. Implementation of this bill would lead to staff shortages, as many excellent sleep technicians would no longer be able to conduct studies. Furthermore, it would negatively impact patient care as it would lead to long waits to seek treatment at sleep centers.

Please contact your state representatives by e-mail and phone. We respectfully request your support by signing the petition and forwarding to the senators below and any other interested parties.
