SOUTH AFRICAS SOLE ELECTRICITY GENERATION COMPANY - ESKOM
-from receiving another 31.1\% tariff
1. Governor Reserve Bank Mr T Mboweni said it was a threat to inflation and proposed a "once-off tax" rather than a tariff hike to help Eskom build capacity.
2. Eskom's 2008 annual report showed Eskom Head basic salary increased from R3.914 million in 2008 to R4.96m this year.plus performance shares worth R681 446 and could also expect deferred bonus shares in 2011.
3. Last week Eskom deputy, exposed a leaked confidential internal memo from Eskom that revealed gross mismanagement of funds during the procurement of capital and management of coal supplies
4. Eskom employees settled last month for a 10,55 percent salary after they wanted a 14 percent wage hike -2x inflation rate
6. DA leader Helen Zille called the increase a "slap in the face" for consumers who were already "tightening their belts" because of the 34 percent increase earlier this year
7. Eskom is now using contradictory arguments to push for more price increases, expecting consumers to keep paying more even while the economy shrinks, spending slows and jobs are lost
9. A 34\% increase would also hit small and medium businesses who are already struggling with the effects of the global financial crisis. Many might be forced to close their doors and retrench workers, further exacerbating a trend towards recession
10. Patrick Craven, the unions national spokesperson says Eskom should stay within inflation rate.
