Stop the Federal Marriage Amendment

Efforts are underway to amend the United States Constitution to define marriage. One does not have to support gay marriage in order to oppose efforts to amend our Constitution on this issue. We the undersigned oppose any such federal marriage amendment for the following reasons:
1.) Establishing a one-size-fits all national policy on marriage is a violation of the core American philosophy of federalism. This issue should be addressed and resolved at the state level.
2.) The federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) already protects states which would choose not to recognize gay marriages from other states.
3.) The Constitution is not an appropriate vehicle to address social policy. The last time it was tried - Prohibition - the amendment was quickly repealed.
4.) This country faces far more serious problems, including the threat of future terrorist attacks and out-of-control government spending.
5.) If you really want to amend the Constitution to help the family, a better idea would be to repeal the 16th amendment which gave us the income tax and IRS.
Perhaps the best resolution of this issue would be to get government OUT of the business of sanctioning marriage altogether and return the institution to churches and other cultural organizations where it belongs.
For the reasons outlined above, and others, we urge you to oppose efforts to alter the Constitution of the United States with a federal marriage amendment.
