Students and Parents Against New Uniform Policy
Sign Now
DeBakey High School for Health Professions is not suffering from a lack of discipline or a drop in academics. Nonetheless, the students are being punished with a stricter uniform policy. Not only is the choice of colors more limited ("DeBakey" blue, navy blue, and white), but there is complete lack of a competitive market and pricing. Only the PTA has been given the right to distribute the DeBakey logo, which means they can charge whatever they like because we are forced to buy the uniform. In a school where the majority of students are on free or reduced lunch, students are struggling to pay for clothes deemed appropriate to wear.
Elsewhere, the same shirts without the logo can be found at much cheaper prices. For example, at Walmart, a pack of four polos is $18 whereas buying four of the cheapest PTA polo would cost $72. In the state of our economy right now, families don't have much to spare; spending is tight, and we have to do everything we can to save. The difference of $54 for the same shirts is truly unreasonable--especially for some families that have multiple students enrolled at DeBakey High School. Furthermore, existing students have already purchased clothing that complied with the previous uniform policy and will now have to spend even more to comply with the new policy.
All we ask is to negotiate an agreement that would perhaps lower the cost of your merchandise, allow families to purchase uniforms in regular stores, or continue on with the previous DeBakey uniform policy.
