The link above is about a senior citizen named Mr Sahay, aged 75 years, whom we see every evening selling hand puppets in F Block, Connaught Place, New Delhi. We should be ashamed that a senior citizen of our country is living a life of such difficulty and hardships (if not humiliation and indignity) for reasons totally outside his control. While the government cannot change certain basic realities of his life, it can at least attempt to lighten his burden of responsibilities and make his circumstances such that he can live his old age with the comfort, peace and dignity that he is rightfully entitled to.
As the link tells us, Mr Sahay had been a bank employee. So, it might be possible for the government to identify some related task/job for him which he can do from his hometown of Rohtak without having to travel all the way to Delhi every day and which can be a source of a steady and regular income that would support his family.
Secondly and/or alternatively, it might make sense to check if his daughter (whom he supports) can be given an appropriate task/job which would relieve Mr Sahay of having to shoulder the burden alone.
In a country of more than a billion people, there are possibly countless Mr Sahays. But we cannot afford to use this as an excuse to ignore what our conscience tells us when we come directly face to face with one of them. If we can support one Mr Sahay, that would be a big step forward in itself.
