OFF-LEASH DOG ACCESS TO BE BANNED AT THE ALBANY LANDFILL

There is a concerted effort to take away off-leash access in the San Francisco Bay Area. Now California State Park officials have ordered to ban off-leash access at the beloved Albany Landfill. The Albany Landfill has provided off-leash access, even to disabled users, for its entire history since dumping stopped in the mid 1980s. Plants, birds, reptiles and mammals have increased and thrived throughout that time. It exemplifies compatible activities and an evolving, thriving urban ecology in a densely populated urban area.

The presence of dog owners and dogs has kept this area safe from crime and free of debris. Volunteers have pulled star thistle, cleaned up trash, put up bag dispensers, donated garbage cans, and self-regulated for 20 years.

The Albany Landfill is scheduled to become part of the future Eastshore State Park. In December 2002, the State Parks Commission agreed that the issue of off-leash dogs (as well as the issue of public art) would have to be resolved through detailed park planning with public input before final decisions are made.

Now Citizens for East Shore State Park (CESP) and the local Sierra Club chapter have pressured the State Parks administration to install Dogs On Leash Only signs. We MUST protest this move.

This is a local issue for those of us who live in the Bay Area. It is also a state-wide issue, as it threatens off-leash access in public space, regardless of location, historical use, or public input.
WE SUPPORT OFF-LEASH DOG ACCESS AT THE ALBANY LANDFILL.
