The decision by the UCI administration to close the Center for Women and Men directly contradicts the University of Californias commitment to educate the campus community on various issues of gender equity and violence. The Center provided critical services and resources to the UCI community and beyond: addressing gender inequity, sexual discrimination, harassment, assault, and the social causes of violence; the prevention of sexual violence; promoting mutually respective relationships; educating and empowering students, faculty, and staff to create a campus community free of violence. When the UCI Administration closed the Center for Women and Men this summer without input from students or faculty they revealed that working toward the elimination of violence is not a priority for the UCI administration.
We know the UCI administration does not want to send this message to the campus community or the community at large. Do the right thing, Chancellor Cicerone re-open the Center for Women and Men. Students, staff, and faculty want it the UCI campus needs it!
