This petition is a plea to end the inhumane treatment of prisoners in Texas Prisons being held in Administration Segregation otherwise know as Adseg, and High Security Units, which are all solitary confinement cells. Texas has one of the highest inmate population in solitary confinement in The United States. Inmates in solitary confinement are subjected to the following conditions:
Lack of dignity, sleep depravation, small sized cells, unsanitary conditions, improper plumbing and electricity, inadequate bathing and other hygiene, inadequate seasonal clothing and shoes, food that lacks nutrition for health and strength, contaminated, and dirty water, and lack of water filters and bottled water, inadequate exercise and recreation, and access to the outdoors, improper medications, and lack of psychiatric services, improper ventilation, lighting, and heating, lack of educational programs, and classes, and rehabilitation. Long duration's of time in solitary resulting in decades at a time, continuous strip searches, and use of unnecessary restraints, use of laser, and chemical sprays. Physical and mental abuse by medical and prison staff. Lack of religious services, and the right to one's own religion. Extreme noise, racist and group abuse, degrading and inhumane treatment, Non contact and restricted visits. Restrictions and denial of telephone calls. Lack of contact with other inmates or human beings. Lack of case review and due process, resulting in longer sentences, and parole denials. And includes all other abuses and inhumane conditions not mentioned.
This goes against the Constitution of America's 8th amendment which states: excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, Nor cruel and unusual punishment inflicted.
The effects of such treatment of prisoners include, extreme anxiety and other mental conditions causing drug addicting medications to be administered. Physical deterioration making an inmate more likely to contract a disease and other medical conditions. The inability to think rationally and to reason. Extreme anger, resentment, hate, violent behavior and irritated tendencies, and suicidal tendencies and actions.
The lack of rehabilitation and a failure of TDCJ to rehabilitate inmates so that they can be released back into society safely.
As fellow human beings, we plea for an immediate change in all conditions of all solitary confinement prisoners. We ask that all conditions be brought to a level that is humane and civilized, and demand that all of the above conditions be reviewed and changed at once. We also demand the release of solitary confinement prisoners into general population, that are being held in solitary confinement without good cause. We ask that solitary confinement cells do not be used for racist, group, or punishment reasons.
The citizens and taxpayers of Texas should not be paying for punishment and inhumane treatment and their tax dollars should go to the rehabilitation of inmates, to provide the safe return of prisoners into their communities.
