It is the job of the director of Nutrition for DENTON ISD to oversee the Nutrition of all of DENTON ISD and not just a selected few schools. If it is going to be a certain way for one school then it should be that way for all schools.
It is pointless to prohibit the sale of certain foods and beverages, because students can get those items outside of school. Plus, there is NO such thing as a bad food or beverage. All foods can fit into a healthy eating pattern; therefore, there is no reason to prohibit the availability of certain foods.
Banning specific food and beverage items in schools is counter-productive; students will see them as a forbidden-fruit and be more likely to desire them. Prohibiting less nutritious items from schools will have little impact on students overall dietary intake, but will decrease school revenues raised from food and beverage sales.
Here are a few requirements that ALL schools, not just John H Guyer HS, have to follow:
1. Chips have to be 1oz. or less and cannot contain more than 7.5\% grams of fat.
2. Candy has to be 1.5oz. Or bigger.
3. Drinks can only be 12 oz. or less and cannot contain more than 30grams of sugar/8oz. of fluid.
4. Pastries cannot be 3 oz. or more.
5. Fruit juice or juice products containing less than 20 percent real fruit or vegetable juice.
