We the students of the early college junior program, feel as though Demonstrations for the current quarter are not only a waist of a day, but are also cutting into the time that the student body needs to review for the California expected curriculum for English 11 and United States History. We agree that the ability to publicly speak is an important trait to carry when the students transfer into the work force, however so is the ability to manage time reasonably. We the people, in order to form a more perfect union, strongly disagree with the wasted time spent on these “Demo’s.” We are sure that someone with a background of English studies and teaching, such as one of the subjects whom this petition is addressed, can understand the lack of necessity for redundancy in class-room demonstrations. Demonstrations are a waste of school resources and time. All students participate in Semester Exhibition, therefore making demonstrations not only a repetitive and time wasting activity, but demo’s are also robbing the Students of ECJC their well deserved rights to learn. An analogy for our student class could be described as a sub-categorized government. We tend to lean towards wanting to govern ourselves in order to maintain a healthy distinction between constant school work and the semi-social lives we are able to carry on with the amount of work the students do. In the words of the great Thomas Jefferson “A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned - this is the sum of good government.” The students of the wonderful junior class have developed a thriving want toward learning and expanding on their current knowledge. Martin Luther King, JR said “A right delayed is a right denied.” Are you as the teachers for the wonderful class of 2012 willing to delay the right for students to learn and develop a better understanding for information previously covered? The students understand that the Demonstrations are only presented in a single day. However, the mental and physical preparation required for demonstrations easily exceed a week. As professional students, we strongly disagree with the distraction away from academics caused by demonstrations. After all, our job is to learn. Do not starve the general public, us students, the right to do our jobs in the proper fashion.
