A petition to immediately, and without delay, open an investigation into the history and character of the potentially polarizing nomination of Alberto Gonzales for the position of U.S. Attorney General.
We, the undersigned, are concerned and wish an investigation into the following:
Alberto Gonzales' involvement with the Abu Ghraib prison scandal, in which Mr.Gonzales advised the President to work around and/or dismiss the Geneva Convention and applicable Federal laws; Alberto Gonzales' involvement with secret Energy Commission meetings held by Vice President Dick Cheney, where every effort was made to keep said meetings out of the scrutiny of the public eye; Alberto Gonzales' knowledge of the CIA leak of Agent Valerie Plyme, where nothing further has been produced from the aging White House investigation; Alberto Gonzales' history of accepting contributions from major corporations such as Enron and Haliburton towards his political efforts, and the subsequent overturning of legal cases in favor of said companies;Alberto Gonzales' history as Chief Legal Counsel to then Texas Governor, George W. Bush. As a primary advisor to the Governor on the subject of Capital Punishment, we, the undersigned, use as an example the State Execution of Terry Washington. Mr. Washington was a 33 year old mentally challenged man with the communication skills of a 7 year old boy. Alberto Gonzales failed to advise then Governor Bush that Mr. Washington's trial lawyer did NOT enlist a mental-health expert on Washington's behalf, in which he was entitled under a 1985 Supreme Court ruling. This example is but one of many death-penalty cases that clearly suggest Gonzales' ineffective counsel.
We, the people, require an Attorney General who is fair, competent, and who will serve at the will of the people without being an extremist. We demand that our Attorney General uphold the law, and not be described as a friend of corporate special interests.
These requests for investigation listed above bring Mr. Gonzales' ability to become our U.S. Attorney General into question.
Such inquiries are expected to be carried out by our Representatives in the Senate. We, the undersigned, request that our elected Representatives act in accordance with the Constitution of the United States of America in a legal, impartial, and expedient manner,
with an open hearing and review before the people of the United States, on the nomination of Alberto Gonzales to the position of U.S. Attorney General. We feel it is our patriotic duty to request such action from you, our elected officials, and that it is your duty to respond in a timely, responsible manner.
Sincerely,
