To the People: Oppose anti-immigrant H.R. 4437

The recent legislation passed by the House of Representatives, H.R. 4437, criminalizes immigrants who are a vital part of making our country strong. According to H.R. 4437, they are deemed felons at the same time that their access to the courts is severely limited.
In addition to criminalizing a large part of immigrant communities, the bill criminalizes public schoolteachers, family members of immigrants, religious workers and community workers for assisting undocumented immigrants. This bill is not in accordance with our values of democracy, diversity, and human rights.
The bill will affect over 11 million immigrants and millions more of our family members and communities and, as such, represents the harshest anti-immigrant bill in over a century.
The year 2006 represents a critical opportunity for Congress to formulate a just solution to our nations broken immigration system.
We the undersigned urge all Judiciary Committee members to endorse amendments with a TRUE comprehensive immigration platform: 1) the McCain/Kennedy immigration proposal which includes a family reunification plan and a pathway to legalization for 11 million undocumented persons; and 2)Senator Durbins DREAM amendment which would allow undocumented
children to gain earned legalization and ultimately become citizens by either continuing their education in universities and colleges across the
country (two year commitment) or by serving in the Armed Forces (two year
commitment).
We oppose ANY Second Degree Amendments that would water down either
Amendment, as well as an Amendment or bill that would criminalize the
eleven-million undocumented people that live in this country.
Please:
1. Support the Kennedy Amendment.
2. Support the Durbin Amendment.
3. Oppose ANY Second Degree Amendments that would water down either
Amendment.
4. Oppose any enforcement-only amendment that would
criminalize the undocumented.
