Prunella Scales was born on 22nd June 1932 and is another household favourite with a whole list of film and television credits to her name. Her films include Laxdale Hall, Hobson's Choice, What Every Woman Wants, The Crowded Day and Room at the Top to name but a few. Prunella is perhaps better known though to the British public for playing Sybil Fawlty in the 1970's BBC classic comedy series Fawlty Towers, a role she only played for twelve episodes. Another role for which Prunella is remembered is Miss Elizabeth Mapp in Mapp and Lucia, starring alongside Geraldine McEwan. In 1988, she starred in the ITV comedy series After Henry playing Sarah France, a role she played up until l992. Sarah was a widow of a doctor, who lived with her daughter Clare and her mother Eleanor Prescott played by Joan Sanderson. Besides Fawlty Towers, Mapp and Lucia and After Henry, Prunella has made many guest appearances over the years in a whole range of different programmes e.g. Target, Never the Twain, Bergerac, Outside Edge, Midsomer Murders etc. In recent years, she has also been seen in a series of Tesco supermarket commercials as Dottie Turnbell, who is a domineering mother.
Prunella has never received any official recognition from the state and we feel it is time she did.
