ATTN:
Mr. Chris DeWolfe,CEO, MySpace
Mr. Tom Anderson, President, MySpace
Mr. Rupert Murdoch, Chairman & CEO, The News Corporation
Dear Gentlemen,
We, the undersigned, have been made aware that Mr. Murdochs company, The News Corporation, (whos assets include Fox TV and 20th Century Fox television and film studio operations in the United States, as well as The New York Post and London Times newspapers, HarperCollins book publishers and the satellite broadcaster DirecTV) will be acquiring Intermix Media Inc., a company whose chief asset is MySpace.
You understand and know full well that MySpace attracts the fifth-most page views of any Web site. You also understand that MySpace is a web site that very popular with young audiences whom the media is desperately trying to market to (else you, Mr. Murdoch, would not be paying $580 million to acquire MySpace).
However, sirs, you cannot assume that because we are young, that we are ignorant of the medias tacticts to try to persuade us to buy their products. We know if a media company such as The News Corporation buys MySpace, then they have bought our thoughts, our likes and our dislikes. Let it be known that by you trying to acquire MySpace, we have been made aware that our private thoughts are exactly what you are after. If you know what we are thinking, then you can sell to us. (Will it still be safe to write the words I like cartoons in our blogs without having a popup advertising The Simpsons and Futurama? We think not.)
One reason that MySpace is so popular, gentlemen, is because the advertising is sparse and non-intrusive. All this will change once it is acquired by a large media company, only caring for its own bottom dollar. We are not so naпve that when Mr. Murdoch says "We see a great opportunity to combine the popularity of MySpace, with our existing online assets to provide a richer experience for today's internet users," that we dont know the richer experience he is speaking of is only business-talk that means more advertising and, therefore, more money for us.
We, the members of the MySpace community, take issue with this acquisition. We believe it to be intrusive to our private thoughts. We like MySpace the way it is. We like the fact that the advertising is relatively sparse and non-intrusive. We like talking to our friends without wondering who is recording every word we say in an attempt to sell us what they think we want. It is our right to give our thoughts to whom we decide. Remember- without us, there would be no MySpace. WE are MySpace.
Therefore, we, the undersigned have all agreed to the following:
If MySpace is acquired by any large media company, then we hereby pledge to boycott and remove our profiles from MySpace and relocate to Friendster, your direct competitor. We will not be denied a place of our own to think freely without the man watching our every move.
