Action to Save Pet Cemetary

In 1935, the Rosa Bonheur Memorial Park was founded in Elkridge, Maryland as one of the world's first pet cemetaries. In 1979 the decision was made to allow owners to be buried next to their pets, which made national headlines.

Approximately 22,000 animals and 20 pet owners are buried at Rosa Bonheur Memorial park, including Loki, a Prince George's County Police dog, a 29 year old champion Horse named Wiggles, Corporal Rex Ahlbin, a World War II combat dog who died during fighting at Guadalcanal, and Willie II, the beloved dog of former Governor and now Maryland Comptroller William Donal Schaeffer.

Since 2002, when the former caretaker left, the Rosa Bonheur Memorial Gardens has been left unattended. The current owners have no plans to maintain the cemetary, and there are rumors that it will be sold for commercial use. A recent visit to the cemetary finds grass so tall, headstones are obscured. Headstones and graves sunken into wet ground, fallen trees on gravesites, trash and debris scattered throughout the cemetary, markers and gravestones damaged.

This is a call for Maryland Attorney General Joe Curran and Steve Hannan, the administrator of the Howard County Office of Consumer Affairs to take action now! Pet owners have paid to have their loved ones' grave sites maintained, and it is not being done. If the property is to be sold, then the owners (new or old) should be held responsible for interring the remains of both humans and pets and arranging for their placement in a reputable and well cared for cemetary, not mass dumped somewhere.

Society will be judged by how we treat our animals - Gandhi
