Concerning the proposed amendments of which were notified in the Government Gazette No 31387 (Govt. Notice No R. 935), of 5 September 2008.
The Forum for Tobacco Alternatives (FTA)and the undersigned object to this reclassification of nicotine, as it would make useful and widely used technologies such as the e-cigarette obsolete.
To non-smokers, this may sound like a good idea, but to the hundreds of thousands of e-cigarette users in South Africa it is a potential death sentence as they will be forced to return to readily available and deadly tobacco cigarettes.
The process of having e-cigarette nicotine registered as a medicine (if successful) could take more than 2 years and many hundreds of thousands Rands to complete, which more than likely will prevent this from ever happening.
Please consider the following facts:
Therapeutic Nicotine in the form of gum or patches has been shown in real-life results to be less effective than cold turkey, and therefore has no place as a medicine.
E-cigarettes have been used by millions of people for over 4 years without any report of injury or death.
The nicotine per dose is far less than that delivered by patches or Gum which needs no prescription.
Huge volumes of nicotine are legally and cheaply available in the form of tobacco cigarettes.
People signing this petition are voting for their right to have unhindered access to e-cigarettes as an alternative to tobacco.
