I want to petition the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) to recognize and accept HYDRAULICS as an occupational hazard and to include it in their database of occupational hazards.
I want to petition the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) to recognize and accept HYDRAULICS as an occupational hazard and to include it in their database of occupational hazards.
Many safety organizations, corporations, safety professionals, and government safety agencies are steered by the influential ASSE - they are a powerful organization. However, for some reason they refuse to respond to the numerous letters I have sent them.
* November 15, 2000 - Letter to Mr. Samuel J. Gualardo, CSP, ASSE President - NO RESPONSE!
* January 11, 2001 - Letter to Mr. McCann and Mr. Barney regarding the ASSEs -Speak Up- program (asks why members do not renew their membership) - NO RESPONSE!
Hydraulic systems are as hazardous, and perhaps even more so, than electrical systems. However, hydraulics has never been recognized, or accepted by the ASSE, or any other safety organization for that matter, as an occupational hazard. As a result, there is absolutely no focus on safety issues associated with hydraulics. This, while innocent people are suffering needless injury and death in the workplace as a result of hydraulic accidents. People who work on and around hydraulics frequently get injured. The number of non-injury accidents that occur is utterly astounding! When people get injured or killed by hydraulics, the root-cause of the accident is invariably shifted to unrelated causes - this has simply got to stop!
Certified safety professionals are tested on all aspects of safety in the workplace with the exception of hydraulics. Therefore, they are not in a position to recognize hydraulic hazards, or to establish hydraulic safety training programs in their respective facilities.
