Betta Vases and undersized tanks such as Betta Hexes are getting more and more popular, despite the fact that these are nothing less then sheer animal cruelty. The Betta is a native to Tailand and is therefore a tropical fish. Residing in large bodies of water in rice paddies, Bettas need at least a gallon of water and tempatures of 80 degrees. They do not prefer small spaces or eat plant matter - they are carnivores and eat insects such as bloodworms (misquitoe larve). More then that, they are capable of breathing surface air. Betta Vases with their plants - mostly lillies which are poisonous to the fish - block off the air. Bettas in vases and hexes suffer and don't usually live their usual two to three years. This petition is being made in hopes to ban the sale of Betta Vases and Hexes as well as convince stores such as Wal-Mart to take better care of their Bettas who often die in those tiny cups because their water isn't changed often enough leaving them open to a number of diseases and a multitude of suffering.
