190 sharks every minute are killed. Between 70 and 100 million sharks are butchered each year, their fins sliced off while still alive and their bodies thrown back into the ocean , thrashing in pain, to sink down to the seafloor.
This slaughter is all done for a bowl of shark fin soup, a delicacy that used to be reserved for the emperors but now it is being consumed by millions every year as it a status symbol. Consumed at weddings and important business meetings, the soup itself is delicious but the fin, which is treated separately, adds nothing but cost.
The shark is at the top of the food chain in the ocean, without the shark the balance of life within the ocean is thrown, and it will affect all of us. The long lining that they do to capture sharks also kills other fish, turtles, seabirds, rays and dolphins.
Help me save the sharks. Nothing deserves to die such a brutal death.
