Naturally raised animals are raised on their natural diets. They are not given hormones, routine antibiotics, trans fats or leftover grease from fast food restaurants as part of their feed, and they are not forced to eat by-products of animals of their own species.
Ethically raised animals are not subjected to cruel factory-farm practices such as overcrowding, inhumane slaughter, cutting of beaks, given growth hormones to the point that the animal cannot sustain its own weight on its legs, etc.
Locally produced foods economically benefit our local area, reduce greenhouse gases and smog emissions caused by long distance transport, allow for closer regulation of our food sources, and help to connect ourselves, and especially our children, with the sources of our food. Overspraying with fungicides and irradiation to prevent spoiling are also not necessary when food travels short distances.
Support for these farming practices will boost food quality and child health, and lead to a more sustainable environment and better health for our society.
A change to naturally raised meat and dairy products will align the City of Toronto with the same progressive stance already taken by YMCA and other daycares in Toronto and the rest of Ontario.
If you believe the City of Toronto should support farmers that farm locally, ethically, and naturally by serving only such products to children in municipal daycares, please sign our petition.
