Bring Natural Gas to Prince Edward Island

"Natural gas is smart energy. Abundantly available, clean and affordable, natural gas is a safe and reliable energy choice for buildings and communities, power generation, and transportation." (Canadian Gas Association www.cga.ca)
An example of savings:
A family has just built an open, detached home in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. They are thinking about buying a new, 83-percent efficient oil furnace. They want to determine whether it will be less expensive to heat the house with a conventional natural gas furnace at 60-percent efficiency than with their good oil furnace. Oil costs 115.3 c/l (currently on PEI and natural gas is 23.51 /m3 (Current total cost in NB. http://naturalgasnb.com)
Tables and formulas can be found on starting on page 54 at aea.nt.ca/files/download/554
- from Table 3, for a new detached house in Charlottetown, annual heating load = 80 GJ
- from Table 1, energy content of oil = 38.2 MJ/L and energy content of Natural Gas is 37.5 MJ/m3
The annual cost of oil heating with a seasonal efficiency of 83 percent would be (115.3 ÷ 38.2) ✕ (80 ÷ 83) ✕ 100 000 = $2910.
The annual cost of natural gas heating with a seasonal efficiency of 60 percent would be (23.51 ÷ 37.5) ✕ (80 ÷ 60) ✕ 100 000 = $836.
In this example, if natural gas displaced all of the oil previously used for heating, the family would save $2074 per year ($2,910 – $836).
Yes it will be expensive. Yes it will requre a lot of infrastructure. But think of the jobs this will create or money it will save every business on PEI.
We, the undersigned, call on the Government of PEI to bring Natural Gas to the residence of Prince Edward Island.
